A Servants Spiritual Day Companion

BELOVED

A Servant's Journey into the Heart of God

By A Fellow Sojourner

About This Booklet

This booklet was born from the life of a community — servants of the Coptic Orthodox Church who have known the joy and the weariness and the dry seasons and the moments of inexplicable grace that mark every servant's road. It was written by those who found, somewhere in the middle of it all, that the teaching of the Fathers spoke into the servant's experience with a precision and a tenderness that nothing else could match.

This book began as a day — a Spiritual Day for servants, gathered around the theme "Beloved." The talks and contemplations and workshops of that day were received with a warmth that surprised us, and the questions that servants asked during the discussion — honest, searching, sometimes heartbreaking questions about identity and calling and the cost of service — made it clear that the material wanted to go deeper than a single day could take it.

So the work went back to the sources. The Fathers were read more slowly. The letters of Fr Matthew the Poor, the teachings of Elder Porphyrios on love, the summit of St John Climacus’ Ladder — all were revisited. What follows is an attempt to set down, in something more sustained than a day’s outline, the word the Fathers are speaking to the contemporary Coptic servant.

“This material does not belong to any one person. It belongs to the Church and to the Fathers. The contribution here has been arrangement, expansion, and application — the work of students, not masters. It is offered under the pen name A Fellow Sojourner as a reminder that the road is walked together.”

What the Booklet Contains

The booklet follows the same three movements that structure the larger Trilogy of Love: Beloved · Wounded · Poured. The first section — which corresponds to this Spiritual Day — explores the identity of the servant as one who is first and most fundamentally loved by God, and how that belovedness is the only foundation from which genuine service can grow.

The writing is devotional rather than academic — intended not for the lecture hall but for the quiet hour before a serving day, or the prayerful commute, or the evening after a difficult class when the servant needs to be reminded of what it is all for. It is written for the servant who is tired, and for the servant who is thriving, and for the servant who is not entirely sure which they are.

How to Read It

This booklet is designed to be read alongside the Spiritual Day, but also to be taken home and read slowly over the weeks that follow. It is not a textbook — it does not need to be read cover to cover in one sitting. It is more like a conversation with a wise friend, to be returned to at different moments, in different moods, and found to say something different each time.

Read it slowly. Read it prayerfully. Read it with a pencil in hand if that is how you engage with a book. And let it work on you over time, the way the Fathers themselves were worked on by the texts they read — not extracted from quickly, but inhabited slowly.
